Dear MacDougall,

I had a visit recently from

Col. Hoskins of the United States Army,

who is Chairman of the United States Board

of Trustees of Lingnan University (Canton).

As you know, when Canton was

overrun by the Japanese, this American,

University at Canton took refuge in

Hong Kong, where it was housed by the

Hong Kong University. When Hong Kong was

overrun Lingnan University reconstituted

itself in Kukong

and

Northern Kuangtung, whe

in turn was able to afford hospitality to

Hong Kong University students who escaped

to Free China. On the recommendation of

the Ambassador who reported that Lingnan

University was suffering from a serious

shortage of accomodation, we felt able to

advi bē “Murs of the Hong Kong and Shanghai

Bank, to make Lingnan University a grant, from Hong Kong University Funds, of £1,000,

for a new dormitory for the use of students.

More recently the President of

Lingnan University applied to the Embassy

at Chungking for financial assistance

towards the establishment of the medical

faculty of Lingnan University at Kukong,
